XMLWriter is installed but Composer fails due to it being detected as missing.

After upgrading from PHP7.4 to PHP8.1 I'm getting this error when running composer:

You can also run `php --ini` in a terminal to see which files are used by PHP in CLI mode.
Alternatively, you can run Composer with `--ignore-platform-req=ext-xmlwriter --ignore-platform-req=ext-xmlwriter` to temporarily ignore these required extensions.
You can also try re-running composer require with an explicit version constraint, e.g. "composer require league/flysystem:*" to figure out if any version is installable, or "composer require league/flysystem:^2.1" if you know which you need.

Installation failed, reverting ./composer.json and ./composer.lock to their original content.

I removed all traces of PHP7.4. And made sure that the CLI is running on PHP8.1. So there's no chance that composer is pulling the wrong version of PHP.

When I run the aforementioned php --ini I get the list of ini files loaded. Which includes the xmlwriter extension.

And it seems like XMLWriter is available in the command line.

The entire situation feels like a bug to me. But I am not certain if I'm just missing something.

I cannot repro this with PHP 8.1.5 on linux.

As far as I can tell, Composer's PlatformRepository class does not do any special treatment for XMLWriter, it is just added if it is in get_loaded_extensions().

So the only thing I can imagine is that you run Composer with a different PHP version or different ini settings than when you run php on CLI.

Check with composer show -p to see what's detected, and also composer diagnose will show you the PHP path etc, it may help figure it out.

So, the phar I got was the latest from the Github releases (2.3.7). I also had tried rolling back to 2.3.5 with the same issue.
The version I compiled on my system does run without issue.

Correction: I commented out these three lines:

$xdebug = new XdebugHandler('Composer');
$xdebug->check();
unset($xdebug);

So I could run xdebug on the system and see what the platform requirements contained. I noticed when building composer and running it it would say Your composer may be slow because xdebug is running but it would run perfectly.

I reverted my comment to get rid of the line and not tax my system while working with composer. When I built it again, the system returned to not working and would give out the error. So maybe it's related to xdebug?

Can you try with the official phar see if COMPOSER_ALLOW_XDEBUG=1 composer show -p ext-xmlwriter works?

If so, you can check with XDEBUG_HANDLER_DEBUG=1 composer show -p ext-xmlwriter which should hopefully help us figure out the issue (I'm assuming it's missing some of your ini files or smth).

I pinpointed the issue to being somewhere in the XDebugHandler. I checked the temporary ini file it generates, I assumed it would filter them out by mistake. But that's not the case and that temp file contains the extension=xmlwriter.so entries.

Try running $ XDEBUG_HANDLER_DEBUG=2 composer show -p ext-xmlwriter This will save the temp ini (and tell you where it saved it).

Compare the entries to see if something has changed. I think you may have already done this (?) from what you've said but this is what I would do as a starter.
