The version of play-json used by this library is 2.3.10. If you intend to continue maintaining this library, I'd suggest upgrading to the most recent version (currently 2.6.1).

It would also be useful to add scala 2.12 support and update scalatest to 3.x.

There is an updated fork of this library that supports Scala 2.12 and newer dependencies.
