The latest version of improv for windows is avaliable at

The Improv code will compile in Visual C++ 5.0 and 6.0. It has not be
compiled nor tested with other compilers for Windows. There are basic
instructions at the bottom of this file describing how to compile the
library file and example program.
Description of various files/directories in this directory tree:
examples -- directory of source code for example programs which use the
improv library.
include -- directory containing header files for use when compiling
programs with the improv++ library.
src -- directory which contains the source code for making the
compiled improv library file. The source code is not
necessary for compiling programs written using the improv library,
and it may be deleted if not needed

Making a Visual C++ 6.0 project for the Improv library
(Similar procedures in Visual C++ 5.0)

Preliminaries:
a. know where the include directory for the source files is located,
e.g.: c:\user\craig\improv\include
This directory contains all of the necessary header files for the
library.
b. know where the source directory is located, e.g.:
c:\user\craig\improv\src
This directory contains all of the necesary source files which
will be compiled into a single library file.
c. know where you want the library file to go, e.g.:
c:\user\craig\improv\lib\improv.lib
This is the file which will be made ultimately by the project. It
is used to compile programs by linking to the library which will
find the compiled definition of functions needed in the programs.
1. open Visual C++ version 6.0
2. Create a project for a static library
menu: file --> New --> tab: Projects --> "Win 32 Static Library"
Location: put a directory location for the workspace here.
Project name: fill in with a name for the project.
button:ok, button:finish, button:ok.
3. Set the compilation output to release.
Menu: Build --> Set Active Configuration... --> "Win 32 Release"
--> Ok.
4. Add compiler definition and include path
Projects --> Settings... --> Tab: C/C++ ---> Project options:
in project options, add these lines:
/D"VISUAL"
/I"C:\user\craig\improv\include"
/D"VISUAL" defines the preprocessor variable so that the compiler
know it is supposed to include Visual C++ sections of library
code. /I"C:\user\craig\improv\include" tells the compiler where
the include files for the code exists. Put in the appropriate
directory name here.

5. Add source code to project:

Menu: Project --> Add to Project --> Files... --> Find...
Add all .h and .cpp files in the source directory.
6. Optionally add include files into project:
Menu: Project --> Add to Project --> Files... --> Find...
Add all .h files in the include directory.
7. build the library (which will be called for example:
c:\user\craig\lib\improv.lib) menu: build --> F7
The default library location is in ...Release/projectname.lib
To compile source files one at a time, you can press control-F7
after highlighting each source file.
8. The library should now be created and ready to use.

Making a Visual C++ v 5.0 project for compiling example Improv programs
(Similar procedures in Visual C++ 6.0)

Preliminaries:
a. Know where the library file is located, e.g.:
c:\user\craig\improv\lib\improv.lib
b. Know where the include directory is located, e.g:
c:\user\craig\improv\include
1. open visual C++ (version 5.0)
2. menu: file --> new --> projects --> Win 32 Console Application:
give name and location, e.g.: name: program, location:
c:\user\craig\improv\projects
3. menu: build --> set active configuration --> Win 32 Release So
that the program runs outside of the Visual C++ integrated
development environment.
4. menu: project --> settings --> C/C++ --> project options: add:
/D"VISUAL" and /I"c:\user\craig\improv\include". The define "VISUAL"
is needed to compile code specific to the Visual C++ compiler (as
opposed to "LINUX" for the linux gnu C++ compiler).
5. menu: project --> settings --> link --> object/library modules:
add: winmm.lib , and down further add:
/I"c:\user\craig\improv\include"
6. menu: project --> add to project --> files: add library file:
e.g.: c:\user\craig\improv\lib\improv.lib (note that you will have
to change the selection filter to see the files that end in .lib).
7. Add a program source file or create a new program file. menu:
project --> add to project --> files: add program file: e.g.:
c:\user\craig\improv\doc\examples\synthImprov\switch.cpp
8. menu: build --> F7 to compile the example program.
9. The file should now be created in the directory
Release/program.exe relative to the location of the project
directory. (type shift-F5 to run it while in Visual C++, or go to
MSDOS window)
