Windows: support of T2 chip equipped hardware #80
Comments
How can we help if this project is not open source? |
Hello, has there been any progress on this? I really need macs fan control to work with my new MBP under windows. |
If you you know how to control fans under Windows with T2 chip, I'd implement it... |
Bad news, looks like Apple blocks access to SMC under Windows. Checked again on the MacBookPro15,2 (13 inch). Related blog entry |

Is fan control reset to auto on shutdown request yet? That's needed at the least to enable using this app and also booting into bootcamp. |
There's a comment about that:

The T2 chip can actually be disabled by going into recovery mode and changing the Secure Boot setting to "No Security" as shown here. The only disadvantage of doing this is that Apple Pay will no longer accept Touch ID on your Macbook (If you're on a Macbook), and of course not having Secure Boot. |
You can't disable the T2 chip, only Secure Boot enforcements |
Closed because it is impossible? |
Unfortunately, yes. |
A valid workaround that still allows you to personally control your fans directly on Windows, is for sure, setting the Security Options to "No Security" and it worked. Saying that, it's not recommended if you deal with confidential information or your MacBook is your "work" computer. Since disabling it, allows to non signed software to be run from inside the MacBook. Still, it will block any outside software to be ran if you remain disabling the "External Devices" boot. Also your Apple Pay will no longe be available by your MacBook. You can still encrypt your disk if you think that's enough. Option "Medium Security" also didn't the trick. Only "No Security". I prefer doing this rather than setting a fixed fan speed or letting it on automatic mode, for the following reasons:

"setting the Security Options to "No Security" and it worked" |
Sorry @kleuter false premise. I thought the app was running, because I have two MacBooks. One with T2 chip (2018 model) and one 2017 model. And I mistaken both of them. Just saw that the App doesn't allow to be executed on the 2018 model. Sorry for the false positive :) |
No problem 😉 |
It's probably possible, we're currently working on the final answer to this question. Let's hope "Hope is a good thing, may be the best of the things. And good thing never dies" |
Awesome! Thank you @kleuter for the update and your persistent hard work. Looks like the results are very promising! 👍 (I had an unrelated setback on my end which prevented me from trying it, but I anticipate using this in the very near future.) Super glad and thankful. |
Kudos for getting this working! Can't wait to try it out! Any ETA on the EV certificate? |
No, it's not needed.
January. |
@kleuter I had to change the Startup Security Utility settings within macOS Recovery to be able to turn testsigning on. If Secure Boot is set to either 'Full Security' or 'Medium Security', the unsigned driver won't load as Windows won't be in Test Mode... It won't be a problem once we have the final 1.6.0 version but it's something to keep in mind for now. With Secure Boot set to 'No Security', I was able to install Macs Fan Control and it works great! It starts up on subsequent restarts as well. Thanks again for finally making this possible! Can I make one suggestion? I know this is kinda off topic but... |
One more thing. If you're planning on buying the Pro version, please hurry up. Cheers. |
What would you think of this? |
Thx for the info, just bought it :-) |
@kleuter I tested the signed build but it says "Error initializing SMC layer......". I also tried to reinstall it to see if it will work but it didn't worked. This is my first time trying the build, therefore I didn't enabled the TESTSIGNING mode. Do i also have to set my Secure Boot to "No Security"? Thanks! |
You mean that there won’t be a free version of mac fan control for windows? |
No I didn't mean it 😃 |
Good news, turning off secure boot is no longer required (the driver is now properly signed) |
It works, guys! Great work @kleuter! |
Great work! I will test as soon as Im on my windows Mac again! |
Great work, dude! Splendid. Amazing. Let me buy you a coffee! (If you have Patreon or GH Sponsors) |
Yes, when connecting my eGPU BSOD happens. I don't know why but if I don't connect my eGPU, it works without problems. I tried opening the app after connecting the eGPU many times and said "No fans detected, please try to reset SMC". I tried resetting the SMC but BSOD happend again. By the way, I mainly use my Windows Bootcamp for gaming. Therefore, I really need the app to work with eGPU connected. I hope the problem will be solved. But still, great work! |
Ok, BSOD is fixed, everyone is advised to update to the latest build |
Hello, |
I have a 16“ MBP with the unofficial drivers and the latest version works fine... |
@biglarryglz any error during installation? Which type of hardware do you have? |
@biglarryglz hold on, a new build (official, not beta) is coming tomorrow. |
Must be working in 1.5.4 now officially |
Currently, the app doesn't work in Windows on computers with T2 chip:
Good news: Windows will be supported! When? Q1 2020. Test builds are in the thread.
