Some details of the technology stack

  1. Ruby on Rails (obviously)

  2. PostgreSQL for Database

Installation.

We recommend that you use a clean rails environment under rvm for avoiding and version mismatch problems.

  • System dependencies

We use postgres for persistance. Please install the appropriate package for this.

$ sudo apt-get install libpg-dev
  • Install the latest rvm see rvm.io

  • Create a ruby version and appropriate gemset. The files .ruby-version and .ruby-genset contains the version of the ruby that we use for development. Even deployment uses these.

    $ rvm install `cat .ruby-version`
    $ rvm gemset create `cat .ruby-gemset`
  • Install bundler

    $ gem install bundler
    $ bundle install

Now you have a rails environment that we use. You can start a development server via the standardbundle exec rails server Enjoy hacking.

Setting up the postgresql database.

You need to install a local postgres database server for testing. You also need to create a user arrive with password testing. Make sure that you give arrive ability to create databases. By default Postgresql only listens on the localhost. This is safe. You may want to check this out in the configuration file of postgresql.
