Is this just a cosmetic change or are there other benefits to using this format (besides being shorter)?

I don't know if there are any immediate benefits, but as a general practice it's good to use the update formats in case of deprecation down to road.

Similar to updating before_filters to before_action (which is yet to be deprecated but probably will at some point for conciseness)
