Cypress test don't run. readdirp: root argument must be a string

All of a sudden I am seeing the following error when I try to run any of my cypress tests locally

This shows up even if I remove all plugins from cypress/plugins/index.js. What can I do to get cypress running again?

The same test suite works fine when running via cypress run but will not run via cypress open

@anark, you can give a listing of the plugin file?

The plugin file is empty

cypress/plugins/index.js

  // `on` is used to hook into various events Cypress emits
  // `config` is the resolved Cypress config
}

This again may have something to do with typescript. I don't see this if I set TS_NODE_PROJECT=0 when opening cypress
