En [abril de este año](http://mitworld.mit.edu/video/775), el profesor **Thomas Pettitt** de la *University of Southern Denmark*, expuso sobre *"The Gutenberg Parenthesis: Oral Tradition and Digital Technologies"* en el MIT Communication Forum, y parece que [disparó definitivamente](http://www.niemanlab.org/2010/04/the-gutenberg-parenthesis-thomas-pettitt-on-parallels-between-the-pre-print-era-and-our-own-internet-age "The Gutenberg Parenthesis: Thomas Pettitt on parallels between the pre-print era and our own Internet age") un *meme* [irresistible](http://www.madrimasd.org/blogs/futurosdellibro/2010/05/25/132011 "El paréntesis de Gutenberg en Los Futuros del Libro") para [los estudiosos](http://www.catedradatos.com.ar/2010/08/14/teorico-1-el-parentesis-de-gutenberg/ "Cátedra Procesamiento de Datos: Teórico 1 El Paréntesis de Gutenberg") de la era digital: **El paréntesis Gutenberg**.
La idea de "El Paréntesis" lleva un tiempo [circulando en ámbitos académicos](http://www.sdu.dk/Om_SDU/Institutter_centre/Ilkm/Forskning/Forskningsprojekter/Gutenberg_projekt), y en resumen sostiene que la emergente cultura digital, está retornando a ciertas prácticas y dinámicas culturales, propias de las sociedades **previas a la existencia de la imprenta**. Lo desafiante de la idea, es que implica un "retroceso" de ciertos valores sólidamente arraigados durante cinco siglos de libros impresos (valores que supuestamente fueron los [desencadenantes de cosas tales como el individualismo, el pensamiento crítico y la modernidad](http://www.slideshare.net/fedeagudo/lowe-cultura-tipogrfica "Donald Lowe - Historia de la Percepción Burguesa - Cultura Tipográfica")): **la producción cultural dominada por la noción de la obra original autónoma, individual, inmutable y producida en soledad por un autor específico**.
El «retroceso» sería en realidad un regreso a una tradición donde **la oralidad, la remezcla, lo fragmentario y la producción impersonal y colectiva** eran el paradigma dominante, luego interrumpido por un período de preeminencia de lo visual –inherente a la cultura del libro impreso– que colocó un "corsé" a la azarosa fluidez de la comunicación humana (el *copyright*, sin duda, es uno de esos corsé...).

### Abriendo el paréntesis
Con la invención de la [imprenta de tipos móviles](http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imprenta), las condiciones de acceso y distribución del conocimiento cambiaron dramáticamente, sin embargo este cambio no sólo afectó las condiciones materiales que facilitaron el acceso a la información a través de la producción masiva de libros (probablemente, en los primeros 50 años de existencia de la imprenta se imprimieron [más libros que en toda la Edad Media](http://books.google.com.ar/books?id=RFOH0qiHv_AC&lpg=PP1&ots=11LjtSFOUn&dq=La%20revolución%20de%20la%20imprenta%20en%20la%20edad%20moderna%20europea&pg=PA24#v=onepage&q&f=false)), sino que, en el proceso, se afectó la naturaleza misma del conocimiento.

Por ejemplo, el modo de producción propio de la imprenta, condiciona **nuestra forma de valorar el rol del autor y las formas de producción intelectual**: un libro es un texto elaborado en soledad, que sólo cuando llega a su versión definitiva, «completa» —y se vuelve inmutable con su publicación, la *edición*— se transforma en el punto de partida que habilita la lectura (masiva, aunque a la vez uniforme y pasiva). Cuesta encontrar un paralelo de esta noción de edición en épocas previas a la imprenta donde **la cultura oral predominaba sobre la escrita, y la copia era manuscrita**: ¿cuándo se consideraba publicado un libro? ¿cuánto mutaba la obra en cada copia? ¿cuándo se iniciaba el momento de la lectura? ¿Cómo era el proceso de escritura?.
Paradójicamente Internet y la cultura digital nos coloca nuevamente frente a un panorama semejante, en la cultura digital **el texto es algo en constante revisión**, producto de una renaciente "cultura oral" presente en la «conversación» que tiene lugar en la red, donde la idea de autoría se diluye, o más bien se confunde con la de intérprete: **el autor no como origen sino como reproductor de otra voces**, una dinámica del *copy/paste* que define el nuevo modo de producción textual, curiosamente muy semejante a las formas que aún sobreviven en la culturas folklóricas. No por nada este nuevo siglo comienza con una [revalorizacion de los comunes](/blog/2009/10/de-los-comunes-descansa-en-paz.html).

En definitiva ¿Qué hacían los escritores antes del "paréntesis"? Más o menos lo mismo que ahora empiezan a hacer espontáneamente los "nativos digitales": <q>Sampling & remixing; borrowing & reshaping; appropriating & recontextualizing</q>, quien mejor que ellos —[señala Pettitt](http://web.mit.edu/comm-forum/mit5/papers/pettitt_plenary_gutenberg.pdf "Before the Gutenberg parenthesis: Elizabethan-American Compatibilities")— para comprender a Shakespeare y el [Teatro Isabelino](http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teatro_isabelino), mucho más cercano a la cultura del *remix* y la apropiación de relatos ajenos, que al estricto corsé del mito del "genio" y la originalidad de la era Gutenberg. (Por el contrario, cuando como alumnos aplican la cultura del *remix* a sus tesis o monografías, el sistema educativo –[enclaustrado en](http://www.quemarlasnaves.net/2008/02/12/tic-en-la-escuela-¿cabe-el-plagio-en-la-educacion/ "TIC en la escuela: ¿Cabe el plagio en la educación? en el blog de Claudio Ruiz") [el interior del paréntesis](http://tumbo.wordpress.com/2008/03/14/algunos-comentarios-a-la-problematizacion-del-ciber-plagio-educacional/ "Algunos comentarios a la problematización del Ciber-Plagio educacional por Paz Peña") de las letras de molde– les responde con una [acusación de *plagio*](http://www.cibersociedad.net/textos/articulo.php?art=121 "Ciber-Plagio Académico. Una aproximación al estado de los conocimientos")).
O en palabras de [Alejandro Piscitelli](http://www.filosofitis.com.ar) <q>Mientras que la cultura parentética está dominada por la composición original, individual, autónoma, estable y canónica, la cultura preparentética había estado dominada por los opuestos de estos rasgos. A saber la performance re-creativa, colectiva, contextual, inestable, tradicional, todos términos que probablemente no sean sino otra forma de nombrar o emparentarse con el sampleo, el remix, el préstamo, el rediseño, la apropriación y la recontextualización, propios de la cultura digital interneteana post-paréntetica</q>.
### Buenos Aires parentético
Queda por mencionar, que el motivo del post, son los ecos de este meme parentético que **llegaron hasta Buenos Aires**, donde se está realizando (comenzó hoy y hasta el 14 de noviembre) la quinta edición de [Cultura y Media](http://cceba.org.ar/v3/ficha.php?id=265) en el [Centro Cultural General San Martín](http://maps.google.com.ar/maps?hl=es&ie=UTF8&q=Centro+Cultural+General+San+Martin&fb=1&gl=ar&hq=Centro+Cultural+General+San+Martin&hnear=Centro+Cultural+General+San+Martin&cid=0,0,13003021185790210763&ei=7GDdTLT7GML68Abz59Aa&ved=0CDoQnwIwBA&z=16&iwloc=A), que incluye el seminario "[**¿Paréntesis de Gutenberg?
