Nice project! This is one of the main things ive always been missing in Obsidian- ive tried some alternatives previous but they were all more obtuse to use or had to be specific (like turning 1 particular folder into a thumbnails view). The universal explorer is exactly what ive been waiting for!

I have a couple of suggestions, bundled together to not spam new posts

  • Note open settings im personally interested in opening notes in a new window popup, but i feel like this could be a setting and or hotkey amongst some options. Single click open new tab, ctrl+click new window, shift-click same window... something along those lines
  • Optional content preview rendering a set amount of lines/characteres from the body, the top of the document (minus yaml). I think the best option would be a toggle in the vault-explorer view itself(rather then a setting)- that way users could switch back and forth as needed
  • All tags toggle option I personally spent a good amount of time without using yaml properties, just typing tags on the body itself. I even plan on eventually refactoring older notes using the tags property but i still feel it would be nice if vault-explorer could show tags from the body itself... this could be a togge in settings- show tags from property only or show all

Thanks a lot for the great job so far, cant wait to see how things will shape up!

Thanks @cptvincer. I am excited for this project. I like all your suggestions. I actually forgot that you can open notes in a new window. How do you use that in your workflow? I don't ever do that.

Agree with the NewTab Option.

For example, I would use split view in OB:

And for now, If I click a note in the left leaf's Vault Explorer, the new tab would just override my right leaf's tab - which is kind of disturb.
I personally hope that the note would open in a new tab, not overriding my current tabs - since I may open many tabs from Vault Explore.

As for the manually "Open in new tab" method, I think Ctrl+Left Mouse Button Click and Middle Mouse Button Click are both very common and intuitive.

Also, for the Plugin itself, I hope there is an option to "Open Vault Explorer in New Tab", for the same reasons.

Thanks @cptvincer. I am excited for this project. I like all your suggestions. I actually forgot that you can open notes in a new window. How do you use that in your workflow? I don't ever do that.

Multiple reasons/cases:

  • Some of my workspaces are project specific and the whole setup(including the tabs open) act like a dashboard- in some theres already too many tabs open. Id compare the feeling/effect to how in notion clicking on a item inside a database opens a popup of the page- big enougth to read/write but you still have the context behind
  • Ive setup a hotkey to create a new fleeting/capture note in a new window. I generally have multiple tabs, sometimes sidepanels and such open and i prefer a popup to write something quickly that i will close right after, without replacing a file in a tab or cluttering the tabs further. When im in the thick of it i often forget when i clicked a link or made a new file replacing the current one so instead of going 'back' i close the tab- and there goes the file i wanted to get back to. Plus the popup can also be minimized- so i can quickly jot down something to remenber, go back to where i was and later review the minimized windows (some are just deleted, really quick temporary memos)
  • Canvas right now/as is have no folding of notes nor any good plugin that does it, so in many cases i make cards with links to notes; Sometimes hover/preview is enought to check contents but other times i like to check/edit back and forth. Theres the hover edit plugin (wich i love) but i find alt-tabing quicker then minimizing/maximizing hover editor via the mouse. Sometimes i just drop the link in the canvas (to later remove the added note), but some canvases get cluttered... separate window is good
  • For second monitor/screens
  • And when i just have too many tabs open

Im hectic, i compare notes and go back-forth all the time. I get in the flow, im writing one thing, remenber another and if i dont jot it down soon i forget

Sometimes i also open the main file im working on as a new window and maximize it (for focus)- leaving the main messier obsidian window more as consultation. Sometime its multiple panels, or big canvas or multiple vertical tabs, search results, queries...
Comparing to zettelstaken (the original method, using physical index cards) the main window is where i grab a bunch of notes and spread then on the 'desk'. In this case/context new window is when im focused on one, the card on hand

@cptvincer The content display that can be configured with a certain number of lines is only available in the Feed view for now. You may preview notes though by holding ctrl or cmd and hovering over any item in any view.
