Lots of repositories have git subtrees that can become stale (and can contain security vulnerabilities).
Having an additional package ecosystem that would create PRs that execute git subtree pull, would be of huge benefit to these repositories.

Submodules are being tracked in #2207, so I made this issue purely about subtrees.
