This PR avoids a crash-inducing MPI race condition in making the calibnight output directory, which happened for himalayas 20211128. I tested this branch by resubmitting that job with this branch (successfully). I intend to self-merge as soon as tests pass so that I can go back to using main for the rest of processing that night.
