You can navigate comment subtrees by swiping left the comment you want to expand. Swipe right anywhere on the screen to collapse the currently expanded comment. All comments on the screen are replies to the one that is displayed on the top of the screen.

If there's a chain of single replies in the discussion, it's extracted from the stack and is presented on a single screen. In this case dashed arrow is added on the left to point that each item is a reply to the one above, and not to the currently expanded item at the top.
Anchors let you mark specific comments and jump around the discussion.

Reading list feature lets you add stories locally to read them later. The list is stored on the device and no one can see it except you. It's different from HN Favorites, which is a public list and can be accessed from your profile page.
