DFXML v1.1.0 will codify output as generated by at least one exemplar utility, allowing for future extension. Presently, that utility is Fiwalk, part of The SleuthKit. Having an official schema is the first step moving DFXML from its present state as a de-facto standard, and should ease proposals for DFXML extensions that may be easy to illustrate, but significant engineering investments to realize.

The current DFXML draft is in the Request for Comments phase. There are also other improvements since the initial version, some awaiting committing. The up-to-date list of issues for the initial DFXML Schema here.

All feedback is welcome. I would like to record votes for proposed revisions to the schema with Acked-by lines in the Git commit logs, in the style of the Linux kernel patch submission process (grep that file for 13) When to use Acked-by: and Cc:).

On October 4th, unless there are objections raised here or on the mailing list, the current RFC version will become v1.1.0. (Also, if you have any issues signing up for the email list, please send me a message - we've had inconsistently occurring problems accessing that server from various locations.)

Summarizing, here is the present timeline (open to change) for v1.1.0:

  • Sep. 20 - RFC 2
  • Sep. 27 - RFC 3
  • Sep. 27 - RFC 4
  • "Beta" period; any "Looks good" votes in this time will be recorded on the small patch that changes the schema version.
  • Tentatively Oct. 4 - RFC 5
  • Tentatively Oct. 4 - v1.1.0.

Feedback at any time is welcome.
