About

help.sh is a bash-script for providing your scripts with an interactive help command similar to bash’s builtin help or git help. The help text is extracted from the script itself using specially formatted comments.

Usage

For up-to-date information about the usage of challoc, have a look at the initial comments in help.sh. An example of how to use this script can be found in use-help.sh.

Syntax

help.sh works by parsing bash comments preceding a function definition. Documentation for a command is introduced by a line starting with a hash sign (“#”) followed by an at sign (“@”), followed by the name of the command.

#@my-command

A line beginning with a hash sign followed by a plus (“+”) should follow immediately. The part of the line after the plus is used literally as the brief command summary.

#@my-command
#+this command does something really useful

All remaining lines starting with a hash sign are stripped of the hash sign and copied into the description string for this command. The description is ended by a line beginning with the word function.

#@my-command
#+this command does something really useful
#
# This is the long description of my-command.
#
function my-command {
    return 0
}

The environment variable HELP_BOL (“beginning of line”) controls whether whitespace at the beginning of a line is ignored when looking for a command’s documentation. When it is set to “yes” (the default), then only comments beginning in column 0 are recognized by the parser.
