On Ubuntu 17.04 (and Arch Linux) sometimes I notice a small GUI freeze that never happened before on Ubuntu 16.10. Probably some recent version of X11 or the need of mounting the /dev/dri device had some regression.
Update: it looks indeed an X11 bug. When the freeze happens, GUIs output:
[74:0802/135900:WARNING:x11_util.cc(1406)] X error received: serial 9365, error_code 3 (BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)), request_code 3, minor_code 0 (X_GetWindowAttributes)
Wayland is finally spreading, and it looks already possible forwarding GUI to its compositor. Testing and providing a setup for Wayland might be a nice plus, and I don't exclude it may help to solve these freezes.
