Joystick plugs should be on short cable instead of fixed on a board. This way this adapter could be used with most (all?) 8/16 bit computers and not only C64.

You can solder some cables instead of soldering the D-SUB Connectors.
Some people integrated the PCB inside a C64 with cables. So both original Joysticks and wireless pads are possible.
