While not super important, the XML wrapper that I generate around the tags should probably validate against the schema.

Per junit-team/junit4#1387, https://github.com/apache/maven-surefire/blob/master/maven-surefire-plugin/src/site/resources/xsd/surefire-test-report.xsd is the correct JUnit schema.

Based on this, the merged reports aren't valid with a element
