Since the REST API is written in go, it seems natural to go for coredns as a more lightweight (?) dns server for this project. Can't think of any downsides right now.

Hey, sounds like a nice idea, besides that it might break any "unsupported" usage of BIND aside from the API. I don't know coredns at all, but I'll definitely will have a look at it (earlier or later since I'm currently very busy). If you're deeper into that topic, would you consider implementing a prototype as a MR?
