ASSEMBLE Attic Spiral Staircase Steps #136

This issue is specific to assembling the Attic Spiral Stairs. #30
We took the measurements and got the steps cut #129
Now we need to assemble and install them.

Stage 1: Assembly

There are 14 steps. Each step has two sheets of ply:

  • Carefully measure the holes to be drilled referencing the metal frame/structure.
  • Drill the holes on the column drill for perfect alignment.
  • Countersink each hole
  • Punch the hole with chizel for embedding the custom T-Bolt
  • Prepare the custom T-Bolt:
    • Cut Wire to length
    • Insert wire into top of flat-head bolt
  • Insert T-Bolt into hole
  • Fill with Glue to prevent movement
  • Glue second piece of plywood
  • Clamp the two pieces together
  • Use Nail Gun to improve bond between sheets
  • Test-mount the Step
  • Drill out the holes in the structure using 6mm metal drill bit
  • Attach nuts to bolts

The corner steps require an extra step:

  • Cut rectangular step into two triangles using track saw

Stage 2: Taking the Steps to the Next Level!

In "stage 2" we are going to cover the steps in artificial grass to create a very different look/feel to the "norm".

I must say I like the tone of this plywood, hence wanting to use it for the furniture, but as I was saying yesterday, it gets too “busy” here with so many different wood tones in close proximity:

The dark Mahogany of the Main staircase and lighter (but still dark by comparison) oak (effect) of the floorboards are different enough. To then throw in a birch plywood it just looks “off”. The green of the “grass” is a good contrast.

I’ve deliberately left the “flaps” unglued in case any of the steps need to be removed for any reason in the next couple of weeks: (while the glaziers are fitting the glass panels)

Once the glass is in, I will be using 3M double sided tape (already purchased) to stick the flaps (non-permanently) to the white frame to hide all the fixings so the steps “float” without visible bolts.
