As per #392, we are trialling meet.google.com at the moment.

User Story

As someone responsible for the operations of dwyl,
I would like to gather feedback on how the usage of meet.google.com is going
To evaluate whether it is a good tool for our organisation (in particular whether it is better than our previous tools).

So far, I have only booked a meeting but there was one slight annoyance in that I got this:

I have long since added the hangouts link to the 'location' field in an invitation because it was difficult for non-google calendars to access it and I often used to get messages 5 minutes after the meeting started asking how to join the meeting.
I'm hoping that seeing as google has taken this option away, they are making it more obvious when the meeting invite is sent out. Would like to know how this looks in outlook for example. Time will tell!

Also, Meet only works in Chrome. Let's see if this is ok for our clients 👍
I originally switched to Safari because the microphone worked very intermittently on Chrome, but hopefully that won't be an issue in Meet.

Had a little lag on the screensharing today but nothing insurmountable.

We couldn't hear @yvonne-liu on the call this afternoon at all thought. Yvonne, which browser were you using? Have you had trouble recently?

FYI: My experience with meet has been OK/not great, I can never get it off mute on the iPhone, its always on loudspeaker with no option to change it

@iteles I think it might be a Google Chrome bug.

I've had the same issue before with Google Hangouts and now today with meet.google.com.

I've fixed it previous by putting sudo killall coreaudiod in terminal.

Does not have a built-in "record" function to easily record sessions.

Meet links do not have 'dwyl' anywhere in the link at the moment. This isn't big, but we've had several people/clients comment in the past when using hangouts that dwyl formed part of the link. It was a neat little feature and I'm surprised it hasn't been carried through. I'm thinking this may be a setting we can investigate changing?

In addition, meet doesn't allow you to change the meeting URL to something semantic like 'emf-demo' which again, was just pretty cool and very clear.

For comparison:

@iteles have we tested enough now to weigh up whether we should move to this from hangouts or should we switch back?

No, I've only just rolled this out to a second client yesterday and we have yet to test it with brand new clients who aren't used to our ways of working yet.

Update: you can now create a calendar invite link for a meet as you can with hangouts 👍

Personally I have far fewer microphone syncing (headphones/or without) issues with meet than those I experienced with hangouts although I've not tried using it on my phone.

AND, you can also now at least change the 10 digit meeting number.

We can only change it to something that already exists rather than anything we want but better than nothing (as we can have two meetings in the calendar with the same link, e.g. a demo with the whole client team and then a separate sprint estimation meeting without the client team without having to switch to a new call).

Still Chrome-only but so far we have trialled this with all of our existing clients (1 of whom is looking to switch to Meet as their internal comms tool) and 3 potential new clients and this hasn't been an issue yet!

Closing this issue as we've now thoroughly tested this solution and the most important metrics (sound quality and low technical barrier to entry) have been given high scores.
