Hm, was this already a decision? How is it currently done for channels that are defined in the thing type?

That's how it was originally...

Originally there were only labels in the channel-type and the channel got the label from there. Then I implemented label overrides for channels in xml so now the channel will use the label from the channel-type unless it's defined in the channel in which case it comes from there.
