### How to simulate autonomous vehicles?

All vehicles in SUMO are autonomous (in the sense of having their routes, speeds and lane changing decision controlled by a computer algorithm).
Most [carFollowModels](Definition_of_Vehicles%2C_Vehicle_Types%2C_and_Routes.md#car-following_models) in SUMO are meant to mimic human driving behavior in order to capture traffic effects caused by non-autonomous vehicles.
The carFollowModels [ACC](Car-Following-Models/ACC.md) and [CACC](Car-Following-Models/CACC.md) are intended to reflect automated driving functions.

The default carFollowModel *Krauss* is simple/general enough to allow parameterization for both human and automated driving. The correct parameters however, depend on the user assumptions about the automated fleet:

- possibly, autonomous vehicles must drive more cautiously than human drivers (i.e. with a larger value of the desired time headway `tau`)
- possibly, autonomous vehicles may drive at lower time headways than human drivers because they have better sensing or faster actuation (i.e. with a lower valuue of the desired time headway `tau`)

Functions that are meant to capture specific human behaviors can be switched of directly
- imperfect acceleration, dawdling: `sigma="0"`
- imperfect compliance with the speed limit: `speedDev="0"` in the `vType` or `speedFactor="1"` in the `<vehicle>`

Further safey-critical behaviors are described at [Safety](Simulation/Safety.md#safety-related_parameters).
