KIM-1 Dual 6530-6532 adapter

Introduction

Welcome to the KIM-1 Dual 6530-6532 adapter repository. This adapter replaces both 6530 chips on the KIM-1 with a single board that contains a couple of 6532 chips, an EPROM and a few logic ICs.

As far as I know, this is the only board that allows you to replace both 6530 chips simultaneously.

About

I designed this board for my KIM-1 PCB replica, but it will also work with real KIM-1s that have both RRIOTs missing or broken.

The schematic is based on Ruud Baltissen's KIM-1 replica, with very minor modifications. The PCB features hand-traced tracks to seamlessly integrate with the KIM-1 board:

WARNING: I have not yet sent the board to fabrication, so it is untested!

The board has been successfully tested with my my KIM-1 replica

Programming the EPROM

You can get the ROM contents from Hans Otten's site

There are two sets available: One that uses $00 as filler bytes and another that uses $FF. Both work equally well, but the one with $00 is what the original KIM-1 has. To program the EPROM:

  1. Download "6530-002 fillerbyte00.bin" and "6530-003 fillerbyte00.bin" from Hans Otten's site (replace FF with 00 if you wish) "6530-003 fillerbyte00.bin" has the ROM contents from $1800 to $1BFF and "6530-002 fillerbyte00.bin" from $1C00 to $1FFF

  2. Concat both files:

$ cat "6530-003 fillerbyte00.bin" "6530-002 fillerbyte00.bin" > KIM-1-ROM.bin
  1. Program the EPROM with the resulting file starting at address $1800
