A powerful, popular bucketing function in Elasticsearch is that of histograms. Such an ability should be available in SQL as well, allowing users to break down data by ranges effectively grouping by a range.

SELECT HISTOGRAM(number, 50) AS h FROM index GROUP BY h
SELECT HISTOGRAM(date, INTERVAL 1 YEAR) AS h FROM index GROUP BY h
