User guidance

To help users create visually appealing, complex dashboards, we could implement a sort of initial guidance. @gvnmagni has suggested a couple of alternatives, one with short and direct indications, one with longer descriptions.

Other considerations

• How does this relate to assets added via Integrations? Should we better promote from the empty dashboard state?
• Similarly, there was another proposal for solution-oriented dashboard creation - [Dashboard] [META] Aesthetic by default #118429

Leaving this one as blocked due to our current layout system not supporting guides, loe:multi-week because even once the layout system does support it there are many considerations regarding drag and drop of items, how we show these suggestions & when, and the maintenance and exposure of the templates. There are many questions unanswered.

Additionally, I'm giving this an impact:low because we haven't heard users complain about the layout system being too free-form, but maybe other teams have heard this?

We can close it. That at least keeps it around in case others arrive at a similar solution idea in the future. The feedback was not that it was too flexible, rather, that customers were dissatisfied with their end result. Giovanni also wrote up some guidelines/tips on creating more effective dashboards. If similar feedback arises, then we can begin pointing them at those and see if it suffices.
