Around 6.1 or 6.2, a bunch of UI changes were made which introduced quite a bit of padding, both at the dashboard level, and for some visualizations.

We heard a good bit of unhappiness about this change from the community:

To fix that end we'd like to:

  • switch to EUI panel components
  • re-analyze the padding decisions

Kibana as a whole is undergoing a large UI update, which is incrementally being addressed, but will be entirely finalized by v7.

I wanted to add to this that in #16664 the minimum width of the input controls is not CSS, but is actually hard coded in the javascript of the visualization. I just checked this in 6.3 and it is still the case. Also, the issue was not only about the width, but also the padding. The padding is a CSS issue.
