It is somewhat surprising to find that elementary has no direct way to format external drives, something which both Windows and Ubuntu have baked in.

There can be various reasons for someone to format an external drive, like fixing a pen drive quickly for instance. Or clearing all data before giving it to someone else.

I could imagine if elementary/switchboard#71 was implemented, we could do something smart in Files to direct the user to that utility.

It would make sense to have Files redirect to an existing utility so long as the utility is present ootb.
