I just started a project parsing the data on past results from electionresults.govt.nz: https://github.com/yvanrichard/nz-elections. So far, I managed to get the party and electorate votes since 2002 by year, electorate, and party, and for special/ordinary/total votes.

Thanks Yvan, I used your code for some ideas and extended my approach (by voting place) back to 2002. Now available on CRAN.
