Does KDE have some API for media keys, or does it expect programs to just grab them directly through X11?

Although having KDE itself speak MPRIS would be a quite good solution, like GNOME now does. It'd automatically support most players.

I'd say this is nearly obsolete with Plasma 5 which has MPRIS support.

A Media Controller systray entry will show up once an MPRIS capable player instance is available via D-Bus.
The MPRIS applet doesn't register any hotkeys yet, but this is something which should be added sooner or later. I've just filed an enhancement bug for this.

As of Plasma 5.4 and KDE Apps 15.08 (not sure which is relevant) on Gentoo ~amd64, the "Media Player" plasmoid (are we still calling them plasmoids?) comes default with the desktop, and "just works" with mpDris2. Hotkeys are also present.

Unless the project intends to also support KDE 4, I'd say it's time to close this
