CS207-FinalProject

This project is a device which uses a laser tripwire type mechanism to send a signal to a computer to launch a certain application when the laser is interrupted and close the program when the laser is interrupted again. The point of this system is to launch any applications that are used daily, whenever the user walks into a room or walks to his/her computer. This is not a very practical system to actually use in real life as it only does one simple action on a computer, but it is just a fun little device to use. The path of the programs all vary, so appropriate changes mucst be made depending on the program to launch and the computer being used. The original plan was to use wi-fi to send the signal to the PC but this deemed to be out of my capabilities and ended up simply using the Arduino connected to the PC and talk to the serial port over usb.

  • 1 x laser pointer
  • 1 x photoresistor
  • 1 x 10k resistor
  • 5 x wire
  • 1 x Arduino Uno
  • 1 x breadboard
  • 1 x sticky tack or tape

This is a straight forward build that simply connects a photoresistor to be read using an analog pin on the Arduino Uno.

Usage

  1. Build the circuit based on the diagram provided.
  2. Download the Gobetwino software and run the program.
  3. Go to "commands" and then click "New command".
  4. Select "SPRID" in the dropdown menu.
  5. Type any command name you would like to use in your code into the command name box.
  6. Click the "..." and select the file or program you would like to open with this program and save the command.
  7. Download the "Taskkill.bat" in the src folder and open the file in a text editor.
  8. Go to the directory containing the program chosen in step 6 and copy the path and paste it into where it says "path here" (the line should look something like this: cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application").
  9. In the third line, replace the word "program" with the full name of the program chosen in step 6 (ex. chrome.exe).
  10. Repeat steps 3 to 6 except this time selecting the Taskkill.bat file in step 6.
  11. After connecting the Arduino Uno, go into "Settings" and to the "Serial port" menu.
  12. Set the Serial port to the appropriate port and the Baud rate to 9600 and close the Gobetwino program.
  13. Download the "TripwireLauncher.ino" found in the src.
  14. Modify the command names in the code to match the command you created in Gobetwino ("CHROME" and "CLOSE" in the sample code).
  15. Upload code onto the Arduino Uno.
  16. Attach a laser pointer to one side of an entrance and the Arduino on the other side making sure the laser is pointing at the photoresistor.
  17. Pass by the laser and the computer will open the program you designated and close the program if passing by the laser again (PC must be on, and Gobetwino must be running).
