What Is VDI Explorer?


VDI Explorer is a software utility program that allows the user to traverse and manipulate files between a host machine and an EXT2 File System contained within a virtual disk image (VDI) without the need to mount the VDI file in a Virtual Machine program such as VirtualBox. Ideally, this tool is written in such a manner that it should be easy to extend the capabilities.

What Is VDI Explorer For?


VDI Explorer was a code developed to meet the project requirements for the graduate course, Operating Systems, assigned by Dr. Robert Kramer at Youngstown State University in Spring 2016. Although the purpose of the code was for a project, the code was written to be expandable and easy to use for anyone wishing to contribute to the project with enhancements or particular use cases.

What lies ahead for VDI Explorer?


Asides from general clean-up and refactoring, the first release of the code is complete and free to use. Developers are currently working on extending this tool to be more generalized to handle different operating systems such as EXT4 and NTFS, as well as handling different parsing of containers/headers to make this forensics tool more versatile for users, as well as working on cleaning up the code, fixing a few minor bugs, and adding some features.
