State of Wikimarkup support

I've noticed that wikimarkup seems to have taken a down turn with the more recent updates. Will it be phased out completely? Are there specific problems with it? Just curious.

wiki markup was dropped in favour of markdown, which seems more widespread nowadays and is supported by many external tools.

Also, the wiki markup parser was a bit outdated and would need to be replaced by a more actively developed library. If someone does this, getting back support for wiki markup should not be an issue though. Inside the wiki there are just a few lines of code to be changed.
