Currently having the same issue, you must kill the server with Ctrl + C. If not, it just hangs at some point during the run.

I don't have a repro yet but i will add one if i set it up

@imorakzai, Can you confirm if the project this error is coming from is a mono repo project or not? I have the same problem with the same error messages, but my project is a mono repo project. I have a reproduction, but I want to ensure we have similar issues before I post it here. If not, I will start a new issue based on my problem. 🙌🏼

If you are still having this problem and your project is based on monorepo, then you can do the steps below to solve the problem

  1. Add watchFolders to your metro.config.js file
    watchFolders: [path.resolve(__dirname, '../../')],

  2. Add the following code to .xcode.env file

 export PROJECT_ROOT="$PROJECT_DIR/.."
../../../node_modules/react-native/scripts/react-native-xcode.sh
  1. Edit the path to the node_modules in your project.pbxproj file
Search for node_modules/react-native/ and append ../../ to the ../ before each node_modules (It should be 4 in total)
With the above path, I assume that your project is a monorepo with the following structure (ReproducerApp being your react native application), If not, then you need to add ../ to the path and test until pod can see your root node_modules

I just resolved this issue by disabling ENABLE_USER_SCRIPT_SANDBOXING in the build settings in Xcode 15, it is present in Xcode 14 but disabled.
You can also find workarounds here if you don't want to disable it. I hope this helps.

@fkazemi5236 I'm on Xcode 15.1 and just tried to:

npx react-native init AwesomeApp --version 0.72.6 --skip-install
cd AwesomeApp
yarn install
cd ios
bundle install
bundle exec pod install
cd ..
yarn ios

(which is what the CLI would do)

And it built successfully.

What error are you facing?

I had tried everything mentioned above but nothing worked. But had success with the below steps:

What worked for me is to build the project by opening ios/.xcworkspace file in Xcode, resolve any issues that are returning by Xcode.

Once the build is successful from Xcode, running the app from npm run start method no longer produces the same issue.

I'm pretty sure this error is actually lots of different errors which are being swallowed by npx react-native start truncating the error output. You can either reveal the full error log in XCode or by running npm run ios.

In my case, the error was that I had a .xcode.env.local that exported a NODE_BINARY location that was in an old temp folder which I solved by deleting it.

@DannyRoberts22

I agree with @joshuamiller above, this is caused by multiple errors and running the build in Xcode is the best way to see what is really happening. In my case I had to in Xcode Open target -> Build phases > Copy Bundle Resources and remove a bunch of duplicated font files from react-native-vector-icons.

This https://stackoverflow.com/questions/50718018/xcode-10-error-multiple-commands-produce helped me resolve it.

valeeum commented Feb 2, 2024

As mentioned above, the best way to debug the issue is to open up the PROJECTNAME.xcworkspace file using xcode and try to run the project in a simulator. Not sure why but simply building didn't output all errors to xcode when the build failed. In the end, for me i had to comment out the one line in .xcode.env.local which is automatically created when you run pod-install. I also had an error in my AppDelegate.mm caused by me missing a couple lines when using the react-native upgrade helper. In any case, having proper error logging should make resolutions a lot easier.

I fixed an error that occurred when running the yarn run ios command. The issue was related to an unavailable device ID, which was causing the CLI to fail. This problem arose after I updated both the XCode and simulator versions to the latest, but some old device versions were not cleared. To fix this, I cleaned out the old unavailable devices and build folders, and then ran the command again with an available device ID: yarn run ios --udid C4DE45CA-66EA-4906-A557-9D3C812411CB. This time it worked correctly.

Summary

  1. Show all available and unavailable devices: xcrun xctrace list devices
  2. Delete Unavailable Devices: Use the following command to delete all devices that are not available: xcrun simctl delete unavailable
  3. Open XCode and Clean Build Folder.
  4. Run the command again to show the list of available devices: xcrun xctrace list devices. And select one udid like C4DE45CA-66EA-4906-A557-9D3C812411CB or Device name like iPhone 15 Pro
  5. Select the device using this command which you want to run your app: yarn run ios --udid C4DE45CA-66EA-4906-A557-9D3C812411CB

Take a look at this. In reality, you can use npx react-native run-ios --verbose to check detailed error messages. In my case, it told me that I needed to install an additional library. After installing it, I updated with yarn upgrade & pod install, then ran yarn start --reset-cache, and everything worked perfectly.

I believe the key here is identifying the problem, so npx react-native run-ios --verbose is crucial. You can give it a try.

I recommend trying to do so in Xcode instead of VSCode.
🛠️ Xcode provides more verbose error messages, which can help you diagnose and solve any issues more effectively.
This approach worked for me, and it might be beneficial for you as well.

After hours of searching and trying all the solutions above, for me, It was Sentry that caused the issue.
first It was a device issue that yarn ios didn't point to the right device, It was trying to run on the default device so I had to change it to the desired device with the command yarn run ios --udid C4DE45CA-66EA-4906-A557-9D3C812411CB.
Then I realized that Sentry couldn't be opened because of a network issue, So I just ran a VPN to access Sentry, then It worked.

It seems mostly network or device issues, don't search for iOS errors.

my best advice is try to build for run in xcode and fix the errors shown.
Also, clean build, remove the build folder in ios, pod deintegrate and pod install.

Hello, Community. I'm glad to share with you the solution that works for me. First clean xcode build, just in you terminal. Navigate to the ios directory, run xcodebuild clean it may throw this error: Could not delete /Your/Path/To/AppName/ios/build because it was not created by the build system.
note: To mark this directory as deletable by the build system, run xattr -w com.apple.xcode.CreatedByBuildSystem true /Your/Path/To/AppName/ios/build when it is created.

Run the following: xattr -w com.apple.xcode.CreatedByBuildSystem true /Your/Path/To/AppName/ios/build

then: xcodebuild clean , pod deintegrate ; pod install ; cd ..

run your app
Hope it works… if not, remove the simulator, give yourself 2 hours of rest while it'll be downloading 7 gb, and try out.

PS: I tried the working formula after restarting my mac 😅
