Welcome to the custom fork of Asus Merlin's firmware:

The focus of this fork is to add some enhancements from various newer Linux kernel optimization back on the older Linux 4.1.x branch. As result, the Linux kernel here is no longer a "stock" Broadcom Linux 4.1.x release but a highly customized/optimized "hybrid" kernel which no longer aligned with a particular version.

The work will be focused on RT-AC86U as this router has a newer ARMV8 64 bit processor. This processor has many new hardware features but not fully unlocked by the older Linux 4.1.x series kernel (unfortunate side effects of many OEM Linux support, they often stick to a kernel they've worked with and use it across multiple devices regardless of whether the newer hardware has new features not unlocked by the older software).
