This reverts commit 78fc425.

@vlovgr what was the purpose of this change? I'm reverting it now to publish v2.6 but we can change it again if needed.

@bplommer It's so the website can get updated without having to create a new release. We had a broken badge which needed fixing, and we also have the latest snapshot version here, which requires the website to be published more often than on tags.

Oh - so do we need to change it to include both the v tags (for release versions) and series branches (for docs and snapshots)?

Yeah, I guess so. Also not sure how well it will work when having both 2.x and 3.x branches. The current setup was never designed with this in mind.
