Plotter

Plotter is a programming language for defining interactive cinema/novel plot, written purely in typescript.

Result of plotter program compilation is a state manipulator that guides users through described plot.

Program consists of blocks. Blocks are steps of one's journey through the plot you are describing using this language. One of the blocks must be declared starting, and any number of which can be terminating (end of story).

Each block consist of a strip name (for interactive cinema, to ease resource manipulation), a name, a question, and any amount of possible answers, between which your user chooses.

Each answer consists of its name, text, and a set of possible consequences, one of which must be default.

Consequence consists of name of block it leads to (or "terminate" word if it's the ending), a condition in which it fires (or "default" word) and an effect (an increment or a decrement of a variable).\

Examples

Below is a basic block declaration. This block has a question and two answers with consequences and conditions. answerOne has two consequences. Lets look at second one: AnotherBlock because "drinkedyesteday" with "odour" - 10, that will be fired if because clause is true, and will substract 10 from variable odour if fired. The first one is default, and it fires if no other is.

Next is a more complicated example, that shows us some more complicated behaviour.

What this basic experiment does is declaring 2 blocks pointing to each other with slight variable changes.

What we`ll do next is compile our program into a state manipulator, and shoot first answer a couple of times to see where they will guide us, and what will be changed.

So you create a state manipulator and get an object with two open methods: getFreshState (creates a user state on the beginning block, with all variables zeroed) and processDecision (receives a state and an answer name, returns next state of this user with a new block and updated variables).

What you'll usually do is create a fresh state for a user starting a new journey and pass this state to processDecisions on each quiestion answer.

As you saw, the moment variable "var" got to value of 3 another consequence fired instead of a default one and the state was marked as ended.

How does it work

Brief overview of algorhitms.

There are four stages to the process of plotter program interpretation:

  • Lexer
  • Parser
  • Semantic checker
  • Runner

Lexer

Lexer takes the source text and spits out a list of tokens.

While unprocessed text is present:
    Skip whitespace chars
    Check first char
    Depending on a first char launch an analyser for a specific type of token.
    push new token to the collection

Parser

    Parse two import statements
    While next token is not 'mark':
        Parse block declaration
    parse starting block statement

Basically all statements and declarations are parsed by looking for specific keywords and tokens between them. Only exception is consequence condition, which is parsed recursively.
