Firefox 40: Firefox warns about signatures but doesn't enforce them.
Firefox 41: Firefox will have a preference that allows signature enforcement to be disabled (xpinstall.signatures.required in about:config).
Firefox 42: Release and Beta versions of Firefox will not allow unsigned extensions to be installed, with no override.

According to the official Mozilla blog, version 46 will not allow any addons which are not signed. Meaning, when that release goes out, this addon is permanently disabled. Signing this extension would be nice as I use Firebug and have recently needed to save console messages.

Firefox 46 released, ConsoleExport can only be installed by overriding the signing feature.
Overrides will not be supported in next Firefox release, this extension needs signing now!

The add-on is waiting for preliminary review on AMO

For now, you might want to set xpinstall.signatures.required to true
