One-liners commands

Here are some useful short commands for Windows systems that may be useful.

Basic PowerShell commands

PowerShell also provides commands to browse the filesystem. Here is a correspondence table between PowerShell commands and commands from other systems, that are also available in PowerShell as aliases:

PowerShell provides objects in several hierarchies, that are "drives" provided by "providers":

Get-PSProvider

In order to use a drive, add a colon symbol to it:

In order to use a provider, add two colons to it:

Get the methods and properties:

  • PowerShell (iex is an alias to Invoke-Expression):

Proxy settings

Get the HTTP proxy which is currently configured:

In order to login as administrator to a remote machine without using the built-in administrator (RID 500), a registry key needs to be set.

Enumerate live objects

Enumerate all processes:

Group Policy

Edit Local Group Policy:

For example to configure the servicing channel on Windows 10 (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/deployment/update/waas-servicing-channels-windows-10-updates):

  • Open gpedit.msc (Local Group Policy Editor).
  • Go to "Local Computer Policy/Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Update/Windows Update For Business".
  • Click on "Select when Preview Builds and Feature Updates are received". A dialog box opens.
  • Select "Enabled" and choose a readiness level among "Preview Build - Fast", "Preview Build - Slow", "Release Preview", "Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted)" or "Semi-Annual Channel".
  • Click on "OK".

Export the Local Group Policy:

The Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) provides Group Policy PowerShell Cmdlets (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-server-2008-R2-and-2008/ee461027%28v=technet.10%29):

Logon scripts are located in folder %SystemRoot%\SYSVOL\sysvol\{domain DNS name}\Policies\{GUID of the GPO}\User\Scripts\Logon (on Domain controllers). They can be implemented in VBScript (.vbs extension) or PowerShell (.ps1 extension). In GPMC, they are linked to a GPO using either:

  • Computer Configuration -> Policies -> Windows Settings -> Scripts (Startup / Shutdown)
  • User Configuration -> Policies -> Windows Settings -> Scripts (Logon/Logoff)

A third way of running scripts on a system consists in using Immediate Scheduled Tasks:

  • Computer Configuration -> Preferences -> Control Panel Settings -> Scheduled Tasks

Scheduled tasks

In order to create a scheduled task that runs at 13:37 ProcDump on lsass.exe (Local Security Authority Subsystem service process) and uploads the result onto a network share, schtasks can be used:

# /ru user context under which the task runs

Software information

In order to list the upgrades that have been applied, using DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management Tool):

In order to check for an applied update, with its KB number:

Then, Active Directory objects can be requested and created with:

In order to easily provide files to a Windows host from a Linux system, it is possible to use impacket to start a simple Samba server:

Other network commands

Some scripts such as https://github.com/thom-s/netsec-ps-scripts/blob/master/printer-telnet-ftp-report/printer-telnet-ftp-report.ps1 use PowerShell cmdlets in order to perform connectivity tests:

Filesystem management

Since Windows Vista, it is possible to create symbolic links on Windows:

# Create a symbolic link to a file
mklink "C:\Path\to\link\file" "C:\Path\to\target\file"

# Create a symbolic link to a directory
mklink /D "C:\Path\to\link\directory" "C:\Path\to\target\directory"

# With PowerShell 5.0 (Windows 10)

The command to mount a volume on a path is mountvol:

# Example from Microsoft documentation

# Enumerate the volumes from PowerShell

It is also possible to associate a path with a drive letter using command subst:

subst Z: "C:\my\path"

Alternate Data Streams

Get files with Zone.Identifier alternate data stream (ADS):

Get-ChildItem -Recurse | Get-Item -Stream Zone.Identifier -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |

Read an ADS:

Get-Content -Stream Zone.Identifier .\my-application.exe

Remove an ADS:

Remove-Item .\my-application.exe -Stream Zone.Identifier

When downloading a file from the Internet, dir shows a filename with suffix :Zone.Identifier:$DATA and with 26 bytes (each lines are ended by "\r\n":

[ZoneTransfer]
ZoneId=3

The Zone identifier is 0 for the local machine, 1 for the local intranet, 2 for trusted sites, 3 for the Internet or 4 for restricted sites.

The ADS Zone.Identifier may contain other fields such as ReferrerUrl=....

The empty ADS matches the usual content of a file. This means that the content is both accessible through filepath and filepath::$DATA.

CSV and table viewer

Display a simple CSV file in a simple GUI, from a PowerShell prompt:

In order to produce a CSV from a PowerShell command:

For a table in the CLI:

# Show all properties of the object

In order to show a table as a list:

In order to filter the properties of an object, it is possible to use Select-Object with filters (eg. Select-Object a*, b* for properties that start with "a" or "b").

Select-Object can also be used to compute new properties. For example, in order to compute a size in Gigabytes, it is possible to use the unit suffix GB and the format string {0:N2} which formats floats using 2 digits after the dot:

WMI

WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) provides information about many parts of the operating system:

In order to gather information about a Trusted Platform Module (TPM), the namespace needs to be changed:

MSSQL client

In order to connect to a MSSQL server from a PowerShell CLI (cf. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/api/system.data.sqlclient.sqlconnection?view=netframework-4.7.2):

In order to find out which tables the logged user has access, here are some queries:

  • SELECT * FROM sys.databases
  • SELECT * FROM sys.tables

The following commands export the first rows of every table to files, once a $SqlConnection has been created:
