The idea is to switch to Discord from the slack that Florida Hackers currently uses.

I believe there to be many advantages to using Discord over slack that can be found in the proposal.

Having migrated an organization from IRC to Slack, it takes quite a bit of work to get people to switch to something new. If there is to be a switch, there should be a huge reason to. Just something to keep in mind. ^_^

## Target audience

<!-- Who are you expecting to impact based on your proposal? -->
Not only will the discord improve communication for FH Organizers with permission based rooms, it also allows a more open community of Florida Hackers to be active on discord from the rest of Florida.

What are "permission based rooms"? Like, private vs public channels?

Does Discord have something like Slackin that we could use to allow for easy requests for invitations?

Discord provides it's own invitation management with the ability to create a permanent invite link. Should Florida Hackers choose to apply for partner status it would also allow for the server to have a branded link that acts as a permanent invite as well, something along the lines of https://discord.gg/floridahackers

I'd also note that the graphics on the site will also have to be updated. :)

Can you please add time frames for these timeline points? They don't need to be exact, just rough estimates. :)

I think discord is a great platform for gaming and it should stay that way. I don't think there's any reason for FH to go against the norm of industry and hackathons around the country.

Some more comments - I think having some references and documentation is important for us to understand how things work differently in Discord. I've used Slack pretty extensively (both personally and at work) but I've never used Discord so I'm not familiar with the differences between the two platforms.

## Target audience

<!-- Who are you expecting to impact based on your proposal? -->
Not only will the discord improve communication for FH Organizers with permission based rooms(The ability to create rooms made for specific eyes only based on roles assigned in discord, which an infinite amount of roles can be assigned to, where rooms can be seen by everyone or a select few depending on assigned role), it also allows a more open community of Florida Hackers to be active on discord from the rest of Florida.

Can you please link to some documentation around rules so that those reading the proposal can have some references?

## Community needs

<!-- What specific issue are you addressing with your proposal? -->
When it comes to determing whether or not Discord should be used over Slack, it's important to note that Slack isn't entirely free and has a data limit for messages and files for the free tier(That info can be found here https://get.slack.help/hc/en-us/articles/115002422943-Message-and-storage-limits-on-the-Free-plan).

Slack isn't entirely free

I'd remove this statement; Slack is free but you don't get all of the bells & whistles that you would if you paid for it.

With Discord, Florida Hackers will have the ability to grow its community without the need for limiting the amount of users in the chat.

Why would we limit the users in a Slack instance?

Currently the Florida Hackers Slack channel is not as active as it used to be, and we have already surpassed our 10,000 message free limit meaning that older messages are getting deleted over time. We only have 1.2 GB left of file storage left. The last message made on our general chat was on the day May 30th.As of Wednesday, August 29th we only hit 2 daily active users with the all time high being attributed to August 22nd with 3 daily active users.

Surely the Florida Hackers community is more than just 2-3 daily active users, therefore I find it vital that we swtich to discord as a platform in order to grow a successful community!

Is there any sort of data to back up that moving from Slack to Discord will actually make the community more active?

Wanna follow up on this. @carloslahrssen I/you can set up a poll to start validating this idea.

Same as my first comment - can you provide some documentation for this? I forgot that Florida Hackers limits joining by email (versus the UF CISE instance that uses Slackin for invitations :p) - does Discord have the same functionality?

2. 1 or 2 days afterwards to create pull request to change the florida hackers site to have the discord invite link
3. After setup and creation, as well as the addition of the new changes to the site. Market the switch from Slack to Discord constantly
- Posting to the Florida Hackers facebook
- and have every individual hack club endorse the new discord

Can we actually force clubs to do this? Individual clubs run their own Slack instances (UF Hackathoners still runs on Slack, I think) so forcing individual clubs to "endorse" the new Discord instance might be against their best interests 😬.

I don't think there's any reason for FH to go against the norm of industry and hackathons around the country.

This is another point that I think that you'll need to address at some point; I've never heard of a hackathon or a company using Discord as their primary chat. Since Slack allows for everyone to be logged into multiple Slack instances, it makes sense that those invested in the Florida Hackers Slack will remain logged into it at work if their work also uses Slack (I was logged in for ~two years after graduating because of this :p).

I understand where this PR is coming from, however, moving chats is a long and arduous process. If you guys can show that there is buy-in from other organizers and the community in the FB group- I think your case can be made.
