This is handled by this plugin. raguay/SelectByRegExp: A fman extension for selecting files in a panel based on a regular expression.

The plugin doesn't do 100% what I mean by this issue. By "filter" I mean that files which do not match the regex get hidden. The plugin on the other hand still displays all files, but only selects the ones which match.
