As you can guess I haven't found any official statements. It's just that every blog and stackoverflow question always states that "ipad doesn't support autoplay". And yes, I have also experienced situations where something has triggered autoplay and then on next load not. It's a nightmare and I would be more comfortable with stating "autoplay is not supported by flowplayer on ipad" or something like that..
and frankly i can't see any use case as a user where I wouldn't be annoyed by an autoplaying video on ipad so we should also tell that to our customers.. they don't want to mess with their customers..
totally agree. unfortunately there is always some "marketing expert" who
convinces customers to force video play onto their visitors would be
clever. of course in full HD.

Try http://example.flowplayer.org/basics/autoplay.html
Is this because of the enforced splash image setup?

Did it work before? Officially autoplay isn't supported by mobile safari (because of bandwidth etc considerations).

There was this myth, and it's documented by us (before I had an iPad to test): http://flowplayer.org/docs/known-issues.html
I distinctly remember some users reporting that it worked.

Generic videotag autoplay does not work on my iPad 4th gen iOS 6.1: http://flowplayer.blacktrash.org/test/videotag-autoplay.html
Interestingly enough I get a "true" first frame setup with autoplay and fp 5.2.1: http://flowplayer.blacktrash.org/fp5/firstframe-521.html - but only on iPad, and it needs 2 touches.
Nightmare.
I'm fine with documenting that autoplay does not work in iOS full stop.
Have you found any official documentation from Apple? - Haha, not funny.
The problem is that users will blame us not Apple.

@nnarhinen - there's also #15 - reporting that video autoplays on iPad without specifying autoplay!
Perhaps working autoplay was a "bug" in iOS 6.0?

Righto, we all agree ;-) I will change the docs to say that autoplay is not supported on iOS. EOT ;-)
@nnarhinen - while we are at it: http://flowplayer.org/demos/layout/#tooltip-demo claims NOT to work on iPad - for me it does on iPad 4. Any ideas what iOS or iPad versions triggered this disclaimer? (I assume you don't have access to our "work" issue tracker https://github.com/flowplayer/work/issues/612 ?)
