Have you considered variable font support for Font Awesome 7?
Variable fonts are an evolution of the OpenType font specification that allows many different variants of a font to be incorporated into a single file, rather than having a separate font file for each width, thickness or style. They allow access to all variants contained in a given font file via CSS and a single @font-face reference.
We could precisely choose the line thickness and if the icon is filled or not with the font-variation-settings CSS property.
