Footnotes not recognized

I have used the [^1] syntax to add footnotes to a markdown documentation file, but the footnotes are not recognized.
Did I do something wrong? Thanks in advance for your help.

I've found my own problem, the footnote must necessarily include a colon after the closing bracket, i.e.:

• valid: "[^1]: the footnote".
• invalid: "[^1] the footnote".
