Problem

When first acquainting with the SD product, it can be hard to wrap one's head around a chart that surfaces the level of detail in today's Infra Overview Diagram, or the more detailed data flow diagram made to inform developers and IT folks.

Jen made a nice Keynote animation for LPL as a great first jab towards this, and the time is nigh to make a nice canonical family of diagrams and animations to take this to the next level.

Solution

Create a simple/basic isometric diagram, that Jen or others can expand upon and add to with more technical information for use in more technical contexts.

Users to specifically keep in mind:

  • Newsroom/NGO execs we're pitching the Workstation to
  • Journalists in trainings
  • Sources for a Source Guide
  • The "Overview" section of SD docs
  • Later, this should be extendable w/ more details, for...
    • IT folks maintaining or installing an instance
    • Anyone being walked through something in Redmine
    • Anyone reading the docs and needing an issue drilled-into

Below is what's been iterated on thus far, based on a few rounds of Slack feedback. The below are available in this Repo as Illustrator editable PDFs, for anyone who may wish to expand upon or add to them! :)

Feedback that got us here...

  • Helicopter beanie and Fedora in earlier draft's weebles conjured not-great associations; Nina agreed that for external sharing, we can keep the weebles more neutral.
  • Firewall misplaced (doh!)
  • OG isometric had computers all facing the same direction, with weebles behind them... John had the novel idea it might be nice to show weebles in front of their respective laptops, with the source and newsroom laptops back to back.
