How to handle disputed memberships

Mike Lissner edited this page Mar 14, 2024 · 1 revision

Recently, somebody signed up for a membership and then almost immediately disputed it. They work for the senate! It would have been nice if they reached out for help. Below is the process for dealing with disputed memberships in the future.

When there's a disputed membership, there are a few things to clean up.

Do this:

  1. Accept the dispute. We will get an email from Neon that tells us to either accept or fight the dispute. The fee is $15 to accept it. Do so and move on. No point in fighting people.

  2. Cancel their membership. Even though they disputed the payment for the membership, they may still have a membership. Cancel it.

What happens:

  1. When you cancel the membership, a webhook event will be sent to CourtListener. That will set their termination date to 30 days later, give or take.

  2. Ideally, since we gave back the money, we'd end their membership on the spot, but instead the 30 day thing is fine. No need to antagonize them.

  3. In 30 days they'll lose their membership benefits.
