I'm using an German datafile the buttons are in German because they are sprites in the datafile but all text is english, i think the text of the programm should be the same as the loaded datafile is. I can help with the German translation if needed.

👍, but we'll need to decide on a translation system to use before this can be implemented. gettext seems to be a popular choice, any other opinions?

I think gettext is the way to go here. It is well documented and widely used.

I see next steps to localization:

  1. Multiline text drawing
  2. Using external font for text drawing (SDL_ttf ?)
    2.1. Find multilingual gothic font
2.2. Prepare resources system for using external resources (embedded to binary? packaging/installing ?)
  3. Find and integrate lightweight cross platform localization library (gettext? what on windows?)
