Currently

Once a new post is sent users find themselves back on the timeline.

Expected

Sending a post should trigger a reload of timeline so the new post is visible. It allows to review the post, double check the content and is nice to see the result of what was just composed. Clearly reloading is a workaround, but reloading should make for a better UX.

Hello. Is this issue still a thing that needs to be worked on? If so, I'd like to be assigned to it!

I guess that this behaviour isn't changed. I have the feeling as if this only occurs, when you use the modal post editor.

I think you can start working and send a PR which will be reviewed whenever you are ready to start. Friendica has a small dev team there is little chance of mid air collision.
