Describe the feature you'd like

I would like an improvement in the notifications, I am not sure what is possible programming wise, so I just try to describe what problem I have.
In Frio that notification are now implemented to show one notification for each reply in thread, before it was one notification for the latest reply. I like to be able to look at alle the replies one by one so I don't miss any, which can happen easy on a small mobile screen (or) if you're overlooking one reply.
But now when you got some very active threads you will have dozens of notifications and they are only sorted chronological. In this case I go though them oldest to newest, which makes it necessary to scroll down very far in the notifications drop down menu.
What could be improved:
Clicking on a notification it would lead to the thread in question with all the new comments highlighted and there would be a button or so to mark them all as read. Then there notifications are marked read and move down in the list below the unread notifications.

Would anything going in that direction be possible to implement?

There is issue #8247 which seems to be WIP and covers similar issues. Perhaps these two should be merged.

And yes, right now notifications are really easy to miss on active posts. I miss mentions all the time. Even with "Detailed Notifications" options on clicking just one clears all notifications from the thread and there could be many.

One of examples of nicely working notifications interface (in my opinion) is Diaspora: they are separate, they don't clear automatically by just entering one of them and they can be marked as read one by one without opening them (by clicking a little symbol next to each) or cleared all at once.

This approach allows not just better overview but also you could leave some notifications unread as reminders, e.g. because you wanted to write detailed reply to that comment later.

That is the case already in Friendca, so maybe it was already partly implemented in the soon to be released version.

Still I would like this to he improved so I don't have to click every notiifcation, I actually would like that additionally, but not sure how it could be implemented, so I just opened this feature request in the hope that someone adds some ideas.

Thanks for pointing out the diaspora implementation, it seems useful too.

Oh, I missed this change then. Last time I tried "Detailed Notifications" they were cleared per each post. Thanks for pointing this out!

Then the only thing I miss is ability to mark them as read one by one without actually reading them. This way it would be possible to quickly dismiss all clearly unimportant ones and concentrate on the rest. Usually I just open each in new tab.

I like your idea though - it certainly would be nice to open a notification and see some kind of "NEW!" marker flashing next to new comments. Not sure if it can be easily done...

How about reversing the sorting, oldest notification on top, as a optional setting?

Do you mind about notifications from 2016?

No and this is why this reverse sorting should of course only be applied to the unread notifications in the list. Sorry about me leaving that part out. :-)

And If I may add in here is, that in such a case, where you click from comment to comment in the same thread, there should be no page reloading. Instead the frontend should notice, that you are on the page and just jump to the comment.
That would avoid additionally load from big servers with a lot users and as well from very small servers with weak hardware specs.

Can we change the sorting, oldest unread notification on top? Maybe we can have a vote about it or some sort of discussion?
