Kafka Streams Example for Amazon MSK with AWS IAM

Simple WordCountLambdaExample.java code example from Confluent, adopted for use with IAM access control for Amazon MSK. The example code demonstrates the use of the Apache Kafka Streams API (aka Kafka Streams or KStreams).

For this demonstration, the appliation was built with Gradle 7.4 as a fat jar (shadowJar) using com.github.johnrengelman.shadow. The application was compiled using Java OpenJDK 8u322. The application was run from within an OpenJDK 8u322 container on an Amazon EKS cluster. The Kafka API commands were run from within a second container, containing the Kafka APIs, also running on the same Amazon EKS cluster. The Amazon MSK cluster was running Apache Kafka version 2.8.1.

Build, Copy, and Run the KStreams Application on EKS/MSK

Commands to create the Kafka topics, build the application with Gradle, copy fat jar to an Amazon EKS pod container, run the application, and produce input messages.

Local Docker Version of Kafka

Local Dockerized version of Apache Kafka 2.8.1 (same as Amazon MSK version used in demo) and ZooKeeper for debugging project. Using unauthenticated Kafka configuration.
