With the static map plugin (https://gazebosim.org/tutorials?tut=static_map_plugin&cat=build_world), one can use satellite images as ground plane textures. However, this is limited to imagery provides by Google and a Google API key is needed.

Would it be possible (or reasonable) to provide a similar plugin which uses an OGC conformant web map service (WMS). These services are the foundation of almost any map display on the internet. They are freely available with different imagery all over the internet and could even be hosted by the user itself.
